Fifty-five years. Just let that sink in.
To celebrate the 55th anniversary of Walt Disney World, I headed out to the Magic Kingdom for a very different kind of day. Instead of rushing from ride to ride, I wanted to slow down, soak up the atmosphere, and look back at over five decades of family memories.
Walking Down Memory Lane to 1971
My parents drove us down from New York for the opening year in 1971. Indeed, that first trip involved my dad half-asleep at the wheel. As a result, it was a huge leap of faith into a resort with just one park. Today, walking through the park brings back a flood of memories about multi-generational family trips.
Honoring Roy O. Disney and Classic Rides
A milestone like this makes you appreciate the history behind the magic. Therefore, we honor Roy O. Disney. He is the true unsung hero of Walt Disney World. Specifically, Roy secured the vision and the financing to ensure Walt’s dream became a reality.
From there, we revisit our favorite opening-day attractions. First, we stop by the Haunted Mansion. In fact, Mama Otero confirmed I rode it as a baby just for the air conditioning. Next, we check out Peter Pan’s Flight and the Enchanted Tiki Room. If you really want to see how much energy it takes to hit all the theme parks in a single day, check out our Walt Disney World 6-Park Challenge post for the ultimate park marathon!
Embracing Change and the Future of WDW
Theme parks evolve, and change is constant. Naturally, construction walls and future lands are always on the horizon. Although growing up isn’t always easy, the core magic remains. Finally, check out the full video above to join my celebration. Then, let me know in the comments: What is your earliest or favorite Walt Disney World memory?
